Just like physical first aid courses train members of the public to provide basic first aid to someone with a physical health condition, Mental Health First Aid teaches skills to help someone experiencing a mental health problem. Mental Health First Aid Training provides members of the community with: Skills in how to recognise the signs and symptoms of mental health problems. Knowledge of the possible causes or risk factors for these mental health problems. Awareness of the evidenced based medical, psychological and alternative treatments available. Skills in how to give appropriate initial help and support someone experiencing a mental health problem. Skills in how to take appropriate action if a crisis situation arises involving suicidal behaviour, panic attack, overdose or threatening psychotic behaviour. Subjects covered in the course; Developing mental health problems Depression,Psychosis, Anxiety ,Substance use. Mental health crisis situations: Panic attacks, Traumatic events, Aggressive behaviours, Severe psychotic states, Severe effects of alcohol or drugs ,Suicidal thoughts and behaviours, Non-suicidal self-injury.
